Precision Engineering Inc - Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study Public Comment Period

Ecology is accepting public comments on the draft Remedial Investigation (RI) and Feasibility Study (FS) for the Precision Engineering Inc cleanup site at 1231 South Director Street in Seattle, just south of the South Park neighborhood. The RI describes what contamination is present, where it came from, and where it is now. The FS evaluates a range of cleanup options and identifies a preferred alternative. From 1968 to 2005, hard-chrome plating, grinding, and solvent handling at the property released chromium, trichloroethylene (TCE), and petroleum into soil and groundwater beneath the building.

The RI confirms that contamination is concentrated and contained on the property, with no migration to the nearby Lower Duwamish Waterway. Ecology has divided the site into four Areas of Concern. The preferred cleanup, Alternative 4, tailors the remedy to each area: cement-based solidification and stabilization in the former plating tank area; in-situ injection of iron and activated carbon in the moderately impacted area; excavation of shallow soil from the drainage ditch south of the building; and groundwater monitoring with institutional controls over capped petroleum hotspots.
